The Right Filter
Matters.

Too restrictive and you're starving the system. Too loose and you're not filtering much. The right filter for your system is a specific decision, not a random aisle grab.

The Right Filter Matters

More Filtration Isn’t Always Better

A filter that’s too restrictive starves the blower and can freeze the coil — the right filter is a balance, not the highest number on the shelf.

We match the MERV rating to your equipment and check static pressure first, so you get clean air without choking the system.

The Right Filter Matters More Than You Think

A clogged air filter restricts airflow, drops system efficiency, and in a furnace, trips the high-limit safety switch. But here's what most people miss: a filter that's too restrictive does the same damage. A MERV 13 filter jammed into a system not designed for it creates excessive static pressure that starves the blower, overworks the system, and can freeze the coil. The right filter is a balance — not just "the most filtration you can buy."

Understanding MERV Ratings

MERVTypeBest For
1–4Fiberglass or washableMinimal capture, lowest restriction — basic equipment protection only
8–11PleatedThe sweet spot for most New Braunfels homes — good filtration, good airflow
13+High-efficiency pleatedAllergy and asthma households — but only in systems designed for the static pressure

If someone in the house has asthma or severe allergies, MERV 13 can be worth it — but we check your system's static pressure first to make sure it can handle one without choking. That's the part the filter aisle at the hardware store doesn't tell you.

When Should You Change It?

Every 1–3 months depending on MERV rating, pets, and household dust. In New Braunfels, where the AC runs heavily half the year, check monthly and replace when it's visibly grey. A $15 filter changed on time is the cheapest HVAC maintenance there is — and skipping it is the most common cause of the "my AC stopped working" call we get.

What the Right Filter Gets You

  • Cleaner air — less dust, pollen, and pet dander circulating
  • Better airflow and lower energy use
  • Longer equipment life — the blower isn't fighting restriction
  • Fewer breakdowns — clogged filters are the #1 preventable failure

Common Questions

MERV 8–11 is the right range for most residential systems. Higher isn't always better — a MERV 13 filter can restrict airflow in systems not designed for it. We'll tell you the right MERV rating for your specific equipment.
Every 1–3 months depending on your filter type, household, and how hard your system runs. In New Braunfels where the AC runs heavily from April through October — check monthly.
Yes. A filter that's too restrictive for your equipment creates high static pressure that starves the blower, overworks the system, and can freeze the evaporator coil. More filtration isn't automatically better — it has to match what your system was designed to pull air through.
Very possibly. A solid-grey clogged filter is the single most common cause of the "my AC quit" call. It restricts airflow until the system trips a safety. Pull the filter, hold it to the light — if you can't see through it, replace it and try again before you call.
