Is Your Furnace Trying to Tell You Something?
Common failures: failed ignitor, bad flame sensor, faulty control board, or a tripped high-limit switch from restricted airflow. We carry ignitors and flame sensors on the truck — those are fixed same-day in most cases.
Check the filter first. A clogged air filter starves the furnace of airflow and trips the high-limit switch as a safety measure — which looks like the system died but is the system protecting itself. Pull the filter. If it's solid grey, replace it and try again. A new filter is $5–$20. A service call is $89.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Uneven heat — some rooms warm, others cold
- Rising gas or electric bills — the furnace is working harder than it should
- Short cycling — turning on and off without fully heating the house
- Weak airflow from the vents
- Grinding, squealing, banging, or rumbling sounds
- Persistent dust or sulfuric smell — a sulfuric/rotten-egg odor means a possible gas leak; leave and call the gas company first
- Yellow or flickering pilot flame instead of steady blue — incomplete combustion and a CO hazard
- Water pooling around the unit
Heat Exchanger Safety
The heat exchanger separates combustion gases from the air circulated through your home. A cracked heat exchanger can let carbon monoxide mix into that air.
