When to Replace vs. Repair
The rule of thumb: multiply the system's age by the repair cost. Over $5,000 — replacement is worth a conversation. Under — repair is usually right. Moorhead will tell you the honest answer. If the system has life left in it, we say so — even when repair means a smaller invoice for us.
A customer in Schertz called because another company told them their 9-year-old system needed full replacement — $9,000 installed. Justin went out. Failed capacitor and refrigerant leak at a service valve fitting. Total repair cost under $300. Three to five more summers. That's a $8,700 difference, and the honest diagnosis was the repair.
Right-Sizing Matters
An oversized AC short-cycles — runs in quick bursts instead of long steady cycles. It cools but doesn't dehumidify, wears out faster, and costs more to run. An undersized unit runs constantly and never quite gets there. We do a proper load calculation before recommending any system. The right size is the right size, not whatever's most profitable.
